Why we
Rescue
Animals hold a huge place in our hearts. All shapes and sizes. All colors. All ages. It is only natural for us to want to protect them. Unfortunately, without a voice of their own, they are being abused and neglected at alarming rates.
They need us to speak up, be their voice because equines in particular, are being shipped across our borders to the North and South, finding themselves in deplorable conditions and inhumanely slaughtered. This is done for different reasons, mostly based on their species and/or size. Full size ponies and horses are shipped to slaughter plants where they are gruesomely killed for human consumption (mostly being shipped to Europe and Asia). Mini horses are often sold as live bear and big cat food for zoos and circuses. And then there are the donkeys, oh how I wish we could say they have a better ending, but they don't. In fact, they are probably the worst of outcomes. Donkeys are killed and skinned for the gelatin in their hides. I wish I could say it happens in that order because in many countries, they are skinned alive and brutally killed afterwards. All of this is so the gelatin can be used in Chinese medicine. THIS, all of THIS, is why we rescue.
How we
Rehab
Each equine is different. They have individual needs. But there ARE common things we can give them all...Love, Security, Safety and Consistency. After all, isn't that what we want too? After those needs are met, we have to make sure we are following a program that will work for their individual needs. Most of our rescues have come in either sick, injured, starved or all of the above. We have been very successful with re-feeding programs. We don't go too fast, because that will cause more harm, but we make sure they get all the nutrition they need and start building them back up in a safe way. All of our rescues are seen by the Vet within 24 hours of arriving. We work with our Vets to make sure we are doing everything we can to support the rescued animal's needs. After we 'fix' the physical, we can make strides to help with the emotional scarring caused by neglect and abuse. Once we feel the animal is ready, we can begin training and teaching.

This is the Bittersweet part. There is no greater feeling than when we see our babies thriving in their new homes...but boy is it hard to let them go.
We only have but so much space, right? At least farm space. Our hearts are big enough to keep em' all! Often, we rescue, knowing ahead of time who will be going to a new home. Other times, the right home comes along later. And then there are times when you rescue and you know the "right home" is with us. We have 14 animals now. ALL rescues. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
